Annual Estes Park Fishing Derby

The 23rd Annual Fishing Derby is held at Lake Estes, which is stocked with trout, mostly rainbows, from the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) the day prior to the event. Don Fitch, pictured above, actually caught a 2 lb. 2 oz, 18 1/2″ brown trout native to Lake Estes.

The Fishing Derby is for all fishermen ages. Approximately 250 – 300 people attend each year.

There will be a contest for “largest fish” in four age groups – for one male and one female – with prizes donated by Estes Park merchants. Categories are: ages 9 and under; 10–15 years; 16–59, and 60 and over. A grand prize will be awarded for the biggest catch overall.

The Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) in conjunction with the CDOW sponsors the event to EVRPD youth athletic programs.

Registration is $4 per person on the day of the event. Pre-registration is $3.

While in Estes Park, stay at The Haber Motel in downtown Estes Park.
